Community Wardens
Since 2004 YDMT has managed a community warden scheme for two parishes. The scheme employs a local person on a part-time basis who carries out practical tasks. These tasks are identified by parish residents and help to maintain and enhance the natural and built environment within the parish settlements and the surrounding countryside. The scheme, similar to the traditional role carried out by a lengthsman, has enabled residents to have a greater control over the maintenance and enhancement of their parish environments. YDMT plans to expand the scheme to other parishes and is investigating potential funding sources.
Tasks
The tasks carried out by the community warden include:
- implementing nature conservation projects
- maintaining parish greens and other amenity areas
- general repairs to benches, notice boards, fences, gates, walls etc
- clearing ditches and drains
- reporting to the Parish Clerk faults with lighting, paths, drainage etc
- maintaining and improving the public rights of way network
- vegetation clearance including strimming, mowing, pruning and tree surgery
- planting bulbs, trees and hedges
- litter picking and removal of fly-tipping
