Transforming lives with the power of nature
We were delighted to be one of 30 innovative projects selected to be part of the Bradford City of Culture Creative Health programme, which will use the transformative power of culture, creativity and collaboration, to tackle some of the district’s most urgent health and social challenges.
In the UK, opportunities to access nature and benefit from its positive impact on mental health and quality of life, is not equal. Our ‘Art and Sanctuary in Nature’ initiative aims to address this by connecting with refugees, asylum seekers and other marginalised communities in Bradford who are disproportionately affected by health inequalities, social isolation, and daily barriers to access nature.
Offering support for those who need it most
Building on our strong connections in Bradford and Craven, the project will deliver immersive nature-based experiences that blend outdoor therapeutic approaches and creative practices. We’ll run nature sessions in Bradford’s green spaces and the Yorkshire Dales, as well as art workshops tailored to address mental and physical health challenges. Two residentials will also offer in-depth support for those who need it most.
Enhancing mental wellbeing and inclusivity
Fiona Busfield, who manages YDMT’s outreach and youth programme, said: “We know that time in nature is a great equaliser, offering a neutral space free from the pressure and challenges of daily life. However, access to green spaces isn’t equal, and so this funding gives us an invaluable opportunity to create a renewed sense of optimism, connection and belonging.’’
Estelle Cooper, Creative Health Manager at Bradford 2025 UK City of Culture said: “We are delighted to support YDMT’s ‘Art and Sanctuary in Nature’ project, and are excited to see how its innovative combination of art therapy and environmental engagement will enhance the mental wellbeing and inclusivity for its participants.”
We’re delighted to be running the project in collaboration with Bradford-based Intercultured Festival, and Malham Climate Resilience Service. With events starting in May, watch out for updates on this inspiring project and our collaboration with Bradford City of Culture!
