Dales Woodland Restoration
Garsdale
This woodland, planted in 2007 and amounting to 8 acres in total, is in an area where red squirrel and black grouse are found. Consequently the new woodland was planted to support both species without encouraging grey squirrels (i.e. no large seeded trees were planted). About 2,440 trees were planted in total and the whole site was fenced to protect the young trees from nibbling by livestock. Open ground in the wood was used to develop an open shrubby edge to the planting, particularly suited to Black Grouse, and to the upper gill area to protect views from and to interesting waterfall areas close by.
