Bee breeding, improvement and education
Tarn Moor, Skipton

The Yorkshire Dales LEADER Programme was delighted to award £7,500 to the Wharfedale Beekeepers for their project based at Tarn Moor, Skipton.

The project has created an area high in bee forage suitable to rear bees, train beekeepers and give individually structured presentations to schools, colleges and others. LEADER funding has been used to purchase bee friendly hedges and plants, hives and hive equipment, queen mating bees, laptop and training for beginners kits. It has created an apiary capable of breeding bees in the required quantity, reducing the need to import stock from out of the area. A bee breeding programme has also supplied new and existing members with good quality healthy local stock.

The project has helped to fund events and demonstrations in bee breeding, health and queen rearing as well providing advice to local authorities and property developers on bee beneficial plants that can be used in the grounds of new developments, parks, recreational areas and highway verges.

The funding for this project was made available through the Rural Development Programme for England, which is jointly funded by Defra and the European Union.
