About the course
This one-day workshop offers participants an opportunity to use stoneware clay to create a hand-built bowl to be decorated with natural glazes collected on a foraging walk. Participants will receive tutor guidance throughout the day to create a truly individual piece inspired by the Yorkshire Dales.
This course is part of Stories in Stone, a scheme of conservation and community projects concentrated on the Ingleborough area. The scheme was developed by the Ingleborough Dales Landscape Partnership, led by Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust, and supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund.
About the tutor
Rachel Whitfield began studying ceramics in 2005, whilst pursuing a degree in Spanish and Intercultural Studies, and has since made use of every opportunity to expand her experience in the field: in northern Japan, in the backwoods of New York State, and here in Yorkshire. Following the birth of her first daughter, and thanks to the support of her husband and family, she started her own pottery business in 2015. With a background in conservation and agriculture, the landscape of the Dales has been hugely influential in her work. All of her homemade glazes incorporate a variety of natural materials found and foraged in the Three Peaks area.
