About the guided walk

Thorns is a former farming community with a recorded history of settlement from 1189 to 1881; it was the subject of a two-year Stories in Stone archaeology project. This half-day walk will introduce participants to its main components and will explain how and why it grew in importance, how it changed through time, and why it was abandoned.

This course is part of Stories in Stone, a scheme of conservation and community projects concentrated on the Ingleborough area. The scheme was developed by the Ingleborough Dales Landscape Partnership, led by Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust, and supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund.

About the tutor

David Johnson initially studied history and historical geography, gained his first experience of field archaeology at the age of 22, and has spent a lifetime trying to make sense of rural landscapes and ‘deconstruct’ the links between geology and the ways in which people through the ages have interacted with their environment. He has been based in Upper Ribblesdale since 1983 and has lectured and published widely on his research interests. He has led four Stories in Stone archaeology projects.
