Stone carving workshop

Learn the art of stone letter carving or improve your techniques in this practical two day workshop.  

In this two-day letter carving workshop you'll learn the art of stone letter carving or improve your techniques with stone. The workshop will include a short introductory slide show-talk, demonstration of drawing and cutting techniques, followed by practical individual and group-tuition.

You will receive an introduction to some basic principles of drawing lettering, design & layout and for carving v-cut letters and raised letters in stone. Followed by demonstrations of lettering styles, drawing techniques and methods of carving with chisels, and much individual tuition

Stone, tools and materials are provided. Students are welcome to bring their own small project and stone, but this is not a requirement. Beginners and improvers are welcome.

About the Tutor

Pip Hall runs a letter carving studio in the Yorkshire Dales. She carves commissions for inscriptions including memorials, garden features and house signs, as well as carrying out public art projects and making pieces for exhibition. Some of her recent large commissions include commemorative seating at Jane Austin’s House Museum, the Stanza Stone in the South Pennines with Poet Simon Armitage and Sheffield city centre seating schemes.
