Cross Wood is located on the valley side between Kettlewell and Starbotton. It is part of the Upper Wharfedale Site of Special Scientific Interest. The land rises in a series of steps which reflect the underlying limestone geology. The limestone grassland here is rich in rockrose, thyme, lady’s mantle, autumn gentian and salad burnet.
9,200 native broadleaf trees were planted on this 12-hectare site - the upper slopes with a mix of oak, ash, downy birch, hazel, rowan, hawthorn and holly. On the lower slopes 1,000 trees were planted in the gulleys in and around existing ash and hawthorn trees, but avoiding the areas of flower-rich limestone grassland. The species planted included ash, hazel, hawthorn, rowan and downy birch. The boundary walls have been repaired and some new fencing erected to stock proof the upper area of trees whilst they become established.
Access and directions
Cross Wood can be clearly seen from the B6160 road between Kettlewell and Starbotton. There is a network of public footpaths in this area – walking from Kettlewell to Cross Wood and return is approximately 2.5km.
