Graveyard trails - Settle

25 July 2022 to 22 August 2022

Join us to uncover the fascinating stories of the people who found their way into Settle graveyard. A celebration of the lives of our ancestors, suitable for the whole family.

Graveyard trails - Settle Parish Church

7pm every Monday from 25 July to 22 August | FREE, donations welcome

YDMT have teamed up with Settle Graveyard Project to bring you a series of graveyard trails to uncover the forgotten life stories and fascinating characters of people who lived around Long Preston, and who are buried in local graveyards. These popular graveyard trails are suitable for the whole family, light hearted, entertaining celebrations of the lives of ancestors who found their way into graveyards in Settle, Giggleswick and Long Preston.

The trails are led by local historian Sarah Lister, whose latest book ‘Meandering down the Ribble’ explores the lives of people who lived, worked and died in the Long Preston area. A must for anyone looking for an exciting and interactive glimpse into the history of this iconic area.

Monday 25 July - High Society Scandal

Newspapers and gossips have always liked a bit of scandal, haven’t they? Especially if it applied to the upper classes. It was just the same in 19th century Craven - this is High Society Scandal!

Monday 1 August - Eccentrics and Entrepreneurs

To be successful the greatest inventors need to do something a bit different and run a great business - it’s often an advantage to be a little eccentric and a great entrepreneur. This trail has some of our best!

Monday 8th August - Mishaps and Mistakes

Some people are just unlucky! In the 19th century there were far more ways to be caught out than there are today. This trail gives us several brilliant (and sometimes hilarious) examples.

Monday 15th August - Sportswomen and a few men

Sportswomen were few and far between in the 19th century but we’ve found some unexpected local stars and some lesser known sportsmen too. Trophies at the ready!

Monday 22 August - Artists and Artistes

Incredibly, from this little graveyard we find internationally famous artist/es, national artist/es, local artist/es and we have a few wonderfully artistic temperaments thrown in too. Prepare to be entertained by our Artists and Artistes!

The trails are being delivered for free as part of Deeper Connections, Long Preston Floodplain project that enhances the important wet grassland habitats of the Ribble floodplain and helps people to discover and protect this unique landscape. We'd welcome your donations to help support our work.
