About the course
This Summer Tree identification course will help you tell the difference between hazel and elm, beech and hornbeam, sessile and English oak – amongst others! We will be focussing on native tree species. During the morning, there will be plenty of samples to look at, lots of pictures and during the afternoon, we will try out newly found skills in local woodlands
About the tutor
Edward Mills is a Chartered Forester and Chartered Environmentalist with a background and interest in woodland management and ecology. He has more than 30 years’ experience of woodland management and forestry, working at first in SE England and for the past 25 years in NW England. He has had books published on coppicing and greenwood crafts and is an experienced teacher. He teaches a range of woodland-related courses and with his refreshing approach, aims to inspire adults and children to explore and appreciate the natural world.

Equipment and requirements
It is recommended that you bring:
• Hand lens (available to borrow if required)
• Sturdy boots and waterproofs
• Plenty to drink
• Sun cream, insect repellent
You will need to be moderately fit. Please let us know of any medical conditions you have and ensure you bring your medication with you.
Lunch of soup and sandwich is provided as part of the course cost. Cavendish Pavilion staff will take your order on the morning of the course. Please ensure you make them aware of any allergies or requirements you may have.

Please note that we have arranged for participants to park for free. You will need to inform staff at the kiosk that you are there for the YDMT tree course.
• Introduction to tree identification (Cavendish Pavilion). Join us in the classroom to learn about basics of tree identification.
• Site visit (Valley of Desolation). A fieldwork session to put identification into practise.
