Finding your place through nature
Green Routes is a new scheme providing opportunities for young people from all backgrounds to experience and benefit from spending time in the Yorkshire Dales National Park.
Working in partnership with the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority (YDNPA) and National Citizen Service (NCS) our aim is to empower hundreds of young people through a series of practical and inspiring experiences.

We’re looking for youth groups in Bradford, Blackburn, Darwen and North Yorkshire who might face barriers to accessing nature and green spaces. Taking part in Green Routes is free and we can also cover costs for transport to activities.

What is on offer?
We work with groups of young people over a 12-month period, building sessions that meet their interests and needs. The sessions encourage teamwork, improve health and wellbeing, and give young people the chance to connect socially. We aim to enable young people to build essential skills to succeed.
“We hope that through Green Routes, the young people we work with will develop life skills, confidence and resilience that can be taken forward into their future lives,” said Fiona Busfield, Green Futures Programme Manager at YDMT.
“We aim to provide a supported pathway that will hopefully inspire them, whether it be a lifelong passion for the outdoors or creating positive change for the environment and their communities.”
Activities might include green woodworking, walking, bushcraft and campfire cooking, lambing, tree planting, species identification, dry stone wall building, path laying and natural crafts - at locations across the Yorkshire Dales. Here are a few of the actvities and locations we offer...
Malham
Walks, natural landscapes, stream dipping, natural crafts, practical conservation and natural crafts.
Grassington meadows
Bummblebee and wildflower identification, woodland activities, wellbeing and natural crafts.
Cleatop Wood, Long Preston
Tree identification, bushcraft, shelter building, campfire cooking, wellbeing (hammocks).
Expanding horizons
Young people taking part will also have the chance to join our Youth Forum, meeting regularly to explore different environmental challenges and identify ways they can take action.
And that’s not all! There is also a Big Dales Day Out, where all the groups come together to take positive action for the environment!
