Apprenticeship scheme scopes out higher level qualifications for trainees

This year YDMT will support eight new paid apprenticeships in countryside management as well as exploring the potential to offer higher level qualifications as part of the scheme.

The 18-month programme helps apprentices develop practical skills across conservation, forestry, peatland restoration, land management and traditional landscape work, while studying towards a Level 2 Countryside Worker qualification at Craven College.

The charity is supporting the next round of apprenticeship opportunities with six employers across the Yorkshire Dales and surrounding areas, while also exploring progression routes beyond the Level 2 qualification. This includes a pilot with Craven College and PBA Ecology to help a local student move into higher-level conservation study while continuing to gain paid experience.

YDMT’s rural apprenticeships focus on practical skills to assist countryside management and environmental projects. Young people learn the skills to work with communities, organise conservation projects and understand how to restore, develop and maintain countryside or green spaces.

Long-term funding, thanks to players of People’s Postcode Lottery, has allowed YDMT to adapt the scheme to meet the needs of young people over the years.

YDMT chief executive Michael Devlin said: “Across the country, there are almost 1 million young people struggling to get a foot on the career ladder or find a suitable training course. Entry level jobs are so competitive, and apprenticeships are essential to support young people into training and jobs.

“Our apprenticeships programme creates opportunities for young people across the county to find work close to home, so that they can remain in the communities where they grew up.”
