Nidderdale Woodlands Update

In 2008, your tree dedications and donations supported the creation of Parlour Barn Wood in Nidderdale. A few years later in 2011-13, and just a few metres up the track, you helped create another young woodland, Harrison’s Wood.

A total of 13,875 native broadleaf trees were planted across the two sites helping to extend woodland cover in the area and link up other fragments of habitat. The largest of these trees is a thriving Ash, which is now 7 metres tall. This bucks the trend and we will continue to keep an eye on its progress!

We returned last year to replace trees lost to Ash dieback and to collect tree shelters and straighten stakes. Volunteers from our corporate partner Vanquis, planted a further 500 trees over the winter, including Hawthorn and Willow, to create a varied age structure for the wood, which will help enhance its biodiversity and make it more resilient to climate change. We also added more hawthorn and willow to take advantage of the soil conditions.

Parlour Barn owner, Doreen Clayborough, said: “My mother was a great fan of wildlife so decided to turn over the land to trees to give her pleasure and enhance our little part of the countryside. After a very rocky start the trees are now flourishing. The increase in wildlife is wonderful and we hope it continues to flourish for many years to come.”
